From David A. Greenbaum, Director
Welcome to the first issue of the news weblog from IST-Data Services.
We will use this new platform for communicating with the campus, IST, and Data Services’ community about the development and deliverables of Data Services.
Data Services is not only a new OneIST Department, it is a new data-centered approach to common campus information technology services. Because of this, there is a strong need to share information and solicit input about what Data Services is doing now and should be doing in the future. This weblog will be one tool to meet this need.
Our commitment is that we will publish an update to this site every two weeks with news about goals, major developments, new ideas and approaches, service releases, and the related work of campus and IST partners.
In this first issue we feature:
Overview of Data Services: You can find an introduction to Data Services by me to be published in the upcoming issue of Berkeley Computing and Communications (BCC). This overview is a part of a series of articles to be published in BCC profiling the CIO/IST organizational change by CIO Shel Waggener and the IST Directors.
Plans for the Next 100 Days: The Data Services Leadership Team has now published our goals for the fall semester and milestones for the next 100 days.
Presenting Data Services’ Work: We are kicking off a new series of brown-bag lunches on various data service related topics open to all IST, CIO, and campus community members. The first one will be Thursday, October 5, 2006 at noon in 2195 Hearst, room 200C, with Peter Cava of Data Services’ Data Repository Management group presenting an introduction to the Campus Data Warehouse (aka “Data Warehouses 101″). We hope to see you there.
Past accomplishments from both the “new” and “old” IST: As a complement to the selected IST operational highlights published in the upcoming Berkeley Computing and Communications newsletter, we include a more complete list of work from the past 6 months of team members now in Data Services.
Increasing collaboration: DS’s Collaboration, Presentation, and Analysis-Collaboration Services has started work on a on an IST Web-based Collaborative Tools project in conjunction with representatives from the other departments in IST and OCIO.
